EKS Cost Optimization

We audit your Amazon EKS cluster costs, right-size workloads, implement Karpenter for efficient node provisioning, and design a Spot and Reserved Instance strategy to bring spend down.

Problems we solve

  • Over-provisioned node groups running at low utilisation while paying for full capacity
  • On-demand instances where Reserved Instances, Savings Plans or Spot could reduce cost
  • Unused namespaces, idle deployments, and orphaned PVCs accumulating cost
  • No cost visibility per team, namespace, or workload, billing surprises every month
  • Fargate everywhere when EC2 node groups could be cheaper at scale

What's included

EKS cost audit: per-namespace, per-workload cost attribution using Kubecost or OpenCost
Right-sizing recommendations for every node group and workload
Karpenter or Cluster Autoscaler configuration for efficient bin-packing
Spot instance strategy with interruption handling
Reserved Instance or Savings Plans purchasing guidance
Resource requests/limits review and adjustment
Idle resource cleanup (orphaned PVCs, unused namespaces, stopped pods)
Cost alerting and monthly spend dashboards

Our approach

  1. 01

    Cost baseline

We deploy OpenCost or Kubecost to get per-workload cost attribution. We identify the main cost drivers in your cluster.

  2. 02

    Right-sizing analysis

We compare actual CPU and memory usage (from Prometheus metrics) against requested resources. Over-provisioned workloads are flagged with specific reduction targets.

  3. 03

    Node group optimisation

We configure Karpenter with consolidation enabled and spot interruption handling. We identify workloads suitable for Spot and those that need On-demand.

  4. 04

    Purchasing strategy

We model 1-year and 3-year Reserved Instance and Compute Savings Plans scenarios. We recommend a suitable split between on-demand flexibility and committed savings.

  5. 05

    Continuous governance

We set up LimitRange and ResourceQuota objects per namespace, cost alerts via AWS Budgets, and a monthly cost review cadence.

FAQ

How much can we typically save?
It depends on your workloads, current utilisation and how much can run on Spot. We estimate potential savings from your own cost data during the audit rather than quoting a general figure.
Does Karpenter replace Cluster Autoscaler?
Karpenter can replace Cluster Autoscaler. It provisions nodes directly from EC2 instance types rather than scaling pre-defined node groups, which enables better bin-packing and often faster scale-up.
Is Spot safe for production workloads?
For stateless workloads with proper interruption handlers and multi-AZ spread, yes. We configure PodDisruptionBudgets and Spot interruption handlers so your services can handle instance termination gracefully.
What is Kubecost and do we need to buy it?
Kubecost offers a free tier, and OpenCost is an open-source alternative with no licensing cost. Which fits depends on the features you need. Both integrate with Grafana dashboards.
How long does the optimisation take to implement?
It depends on cluster size and workload complexity. The audit comes first, then right-sizing and Karpenter changes, with Spot migration done incrementally. Timelines are confirmed in the written scope.
