Observability and monitoring

You cannot run what you cannot see. We build monitoring, logging and tracing stacks that answer the questions engineers actually ask during an incident, and alerts that wake people up only when it matters.

The pages below cover the open-source and commercial tools we use most, how we deploy and operate them, and how to choose between self-hosted and managed options based on cost and team capacity.

Technologies in this category

Prometheus

Prometheus is an open source metrics system that scrapes numeric time series from your services, stores them locally and evaluates alert rules against them. We deploy and tune it for Kubernetes and cloud estates, designing scrape targets, alerts, retention and long-term storage so that monitoring stays accurate and affordable as you grow.

Grafana

Grafana is an open source visualisation and alerting platform that queries metrics, logs, traces and databases from many data sources in one interface. We deploy and secure it, provision dashboards and alerts as code, and design views around service health so engineers and on-call staff can find answers quickly.

ELK Stack

The ELK Stack combines Elasticsearch for storing and searching data, Logstash for processing it, Kibana for exploring it, and lightweight shippers such as Beats or Fluent Bit for collection. We design clusters, ingest pipelines, retention and access control so log search stays fast, secure and affordable.

Grafana Loki

Grafana Loki is a log aggregation system that indexes only labels and stores compressed log chunks in object storage, which keeps cost low. We design label schemes, storage, collection and retention, and connect it to Grafana, so engineers can find logs by service and time and alert on them.

OpenTelemetry

OpenTelemetry is an open, vendor-neutral standard and set of SDKs for producing traces, metrics and logs, plus a Collector that processes and routes them. We instrument services, build Collector pipelines and sampling, and send data to the backends you choose, so you avoid lock-in to one vendor's agent.

Datadog

Datadog is a commercial, hosted observability platform covering metrics, logs, traces, synthetics and security from one agent and interface. We roll it out properly with tagging, monitors, dashboards and volume controls, and advise honestly where open source tools such as Prometheus and Grafana would serve you better.

Frequently asked questions

Prometheus and Grafana or Datadog?
Prometheus and Grafana give control and low licence cost but need operating. Datadog is faster to start and broader out of the box, with usage-based costs that can grow quickly. We help you compare on your actual data volume and team size.
What is OpenTelemetry?
OpenTelemetry is a vendor-neutral standard for collecting metrics, logs and traces. Adopting it means you can change backends later without re-instrumenting your applications.
How do you reduce alert noise?
We alert on symptoms tied to service level objectives, add runbooks to every alert, route by severity, and review noisy alerts regularly until each page that fires is actionable.
